What to do if you get chest pains

When you have had a Heart Attack or Angina
After a heart attack you may experience breathlessness and tightness or pain in the chest on exertion. If this happens, stop and rest.

USING GTN. (glyceryl trinitrate)
If pain occurs and you have GTN take a tablet or spray. If the pain is still there after 5 minutes, you can take up to 2 further doses at 5 minute intervals, as long as you do not feel dizzy. However, if the pain continues after three doses you should DIAL 999.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE GTN. and the pain continues for 15 minutes DIAL 999.

When you have had heart surgery
After heart surgery follow the advice above ONLY if your doctor has told you that you still have angina and that you need to use GTN medication. If you think angina has returned, discuss this with your G.P.

Usually after heart surgery, chest pain relates to the operation, so take your usual painkilling tablets e.g. paracetamol, as prescribed by your doctor. If your pain continues you should see your G.P. as soon as possible to review your prescription for pain relief.

Try not to be frightened
· It is natural to be worried if you have chest pains.
· If your chest pains increase in frequency or start to come on at rest, (even if they disappear with rest or GTN), you should make an appointment to see your G.P. as soon as possible to explain your symptoms.
· If you are feeling low or worried and you would like to talk to someone, ring any of the members listed. They will be only too pleased to listen.
